Beginner Inshore Fishing Gear — Tifton to the Coast

Not every weekend is a dive weekend. When wind blows out the Gulf or you're between spearfishing trips, inshore fishing from South Georgia to the Big Bend keeps you on the water.

Gulf fishing and lobster runs — same Tifton-to-coast weekends.

Rod and reel combo

• 7–7'6" medium-heavy spinning rod — versatile for redfish, trout, sheepshead
• 4000–5000 size reel with smooth drag
• 30 lb braided main line, 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leader

Terminal tackle

• Circle hooks 2/0–4/0 for live shrimp
• Split shot, cork floats, jig heads 1/4–3/8 oz
• Pliers, dehooker, small tackle box that fits in a truck door

When spearfishing is off the table

Steinhatchee sheepshead season, dirty vis weekends, or family trips where not everyone dives — a simple inshore setup still fills the cooler. Pair with our Gulf species guide for ID overlap.

Simple rigs that catch

• Live shrimp under cork — trout/redfish/sheepshead adjacent structure
• Jig head + soft plastic — when bait shops are cleaned out
• Bottom rigs — deeper holes when wind allows

Blow-out weekend plan

When the Gulf is un-diveable: fish protected water, practice knot speed, and still use the cooler. Keep the wind tool honest — don't force a dive day for pride.
