Florida Gulf Spearfishing Species Guide

Quick ID and hunting notes for common Florida Gulf targets. Verify all size and season rules on FWC before retaining any fish.

Hogfish

Long snout, pronounced dorsal filament, changes color with mood. Often on patch reef and hard bottom.

• Depth: Often 20–60 ft on Gulf ledges when vis allows
• Shot: Head shot preferred — tough scales
• Note: Highly regulated — check slot and closed seasons annually

Black grouper (carbo)

Darker than gag, heavy on structure. Out here we call a big black grouper a carbo — can fool you for a monster gag on a ledge at depth.

• Depth: Often 80–160 ft on Gulf ledges and rock piles
• Shot: Stone shot behind the eye — plan for cave runs
• Note: Separate regulations from gag — verify on FWC before retaining

Gag grouper

Wide mouth, mottled pattern, tail square-ish. Structure fish — won't chase far.

• Depth: Ledges and rock piles; depth varies by area and season
• Shot: Behind eye, stone shot if legal size confirmed
• Note: Season closures are strict — calendar is not optional

Sheepshead

Vertical black bars, human-like teeth, around pilings and barnacle rock.

• Depth: Shallow structure — often 8–25 ft
• Shot: Small profile — accuracy over power
• Best season feel: Cooler months on Big Bend and Crystal River area

Flounder

Flat, both eyes on one side, buried in sand transitions.

• Depth: Sandy edges near structure
• Shot: Pinning shot — know size before shooting

Mangrove & lane snapper

Common on Gulf structure. Know snapper aggregate bag rules — they change and stack with other species.

• Depth: Often 60–160 ft on ledges — fast, smart fish
• Shot: Stone shot behind the eye when size is confirmed
• Note: Aggregate limits stack — check FWC before you box fish
