The St. Pete Open is a different animal than a quiet Steinhatchee sheepshead weekend. I've run it seven years or more from Tifton, Georgia. If you're a Forgotten Coast diver thinking about your first tournament, this is what nobody puts on the flyer.

Travel from Tifton
- Drive: ~5–5.5 hours — plan Thursday night arrival or Friday dawn
- Route: I-75 south → Tampa Bay area — opposite direction from Carrabelle trips
- Lodging: Book early — tournament week fills St. Pete / Clearwater / Tampa edges
- Gear: Full tournament rig + backup mask, spare bands, tools
Big Bend vs tournament diving
Weekends in Carrabelle, Steinhatchee, and Apalachicola teach patience and structure. Tournament diving adds:
- Time pressure — decisions faster, less second-guessing shots
- Boat logistics — know your captain, entry points, and gas plan
- Different bottom — Tampa Bay area ≠Big Bend rock; scout if possible
- Competition mindset — legal fish in the box beats hero dives
What I pack differently than a Steinhatchee weekend
- Backup gun bands and rigging kit
- Tournament legal measuring gear — know species rules cold
- More ice capacity — weigh-in logistics
- Recovery focus — sleep and hydration matter across two days

Fitness going into tournament week
Your normal Tifton gym routine should emphasize:
- Finning endurance — long surface swims between drops
- Breath hold maintenance — don't peak too early in the week
- Core and back — boat gear handling daily
Why keep going back
Seven-plus years means the St. Pete Open isn't a one-time bucket list — it's a benchmark. You measure Big Bend solo progress against tournament pressure. You meet the Gulf spearo community. You come home to Tifton with a clearer picture of what to work on before the next Carrabelle run.
