Carrabelle vs Steinhatchee vs Apalachicola

From Tifton, GA · The three towns I dive most

If you live in Tifton, these three aren't abstract map dots — they're your rotation. Each has different bottom, tide personality, and weekend vibe. Here's how I choose.

Quick comparison

Steinhatchee — my default Big Bend run

Pick Steinhatchee when: you want structure diving, sheepshead season is on, and you're comfortable reading tide charts.

Skip when: wind stacks after outbound tide and vis drops below your comfort — have Carrabelle as backup.

Carrabelle — Forgotten Coast gateway

Pick Carrabelle when: Steinhatchee is blown out west, or you want nearshore Gulf without driving to Apalach.

Recent report: Indian Pass & Carrabelle — 65ft vis weekend

Indian Pass (near Cape San Blas)

Pick Indian Pass when: you want Gulf access west of Apalachicola with less ramp chaos.

Apalachicola — worth the extra thirty minutes

Pick Apalachicola when: you're making a long weekend, want bay + Gulf options, or species reports push west.

Recent report: 84-lb carbo (black grouper) — solo 160ft ledge dive, boat went wild

Decision tree from Tifton

  1. Check wind and swell for all three — Windy, local groups
  2. Steinhatchee clean? → default drive
  3. West wind bad at Steinhatchee? → try Carrabelle or Apalachicola lee
  4. Sheepshead season? → Steinhatchee or Carrabelle structure
  5. Tournament prep week? → St. Pete (separate guide)
