Essential gear (start here)

• Mask + snorkel — low volume mask fits better for freediving
• Fins — long blades save energy on the surface and descent
• Wetsuit — thickness depends on your water temp
• Weight belt — adjust so you float at eye level with full breath
• Gloves — line cuts and reef contact happen fast
• Pole spear or entry gun — learn accuracy before upgrading

Non-negotiable safety rules

• Never dive alone. Buddy system every session.
• Know local regulations — size limits, protected species, license requirements.
• Practice breath holds on land with supervision; blackouts are real.
• Flag/float line so boats see you.

Fitness that matters underwater

Spearfishing is intervals: kick, dive, hold, recover. Train:

• CO2 tolerance (controlled breath tables — learn proper technique first)
• Leg endurance — finning sets 2×/week
• Core and back — hauling fish and gear adds up
