Steinhatchee Spearfishing from Tifton
Steinhatchee is my default Big Bend run from Tifton — closest of the three core towns and the one that teaches tide discipline. Rocky bottom, sheepshead when the season and conditions line up, gag territory on structure when legal.
If you're building Gulf confidence from South Georgia, this is often the first town that makes sense: short enough for a hard weekend, serious enough that you respect the water.
Pick Steinhatchee when
- You want structure diving and tide-aware diving
- Sheepshead season energy is on and weather allows
- You need the shortest Tifton → Gulf run (~3 hr)
- You're comfortable reading tide charts and current
Skip or rethink when
- West wind stacks seas beyond your boat/crew comfort
- Vis reports are trash and you have a lee option west
- You're chasing a long offshore ledge day better suited to Apalach / Indian Pass windows
From Tifton logistics
- Drive time: about 3 hours in good traffic — use the drive planner
- Leave plan: Friday after work or early Saturday depending on first splash goal
- Pack: dive bag PDF · full gear guide
- Rules: always FWC resources
